Melbourne families will be given the unique opportunity to discover the adventurous and exciting world of sailing on trailable yachts for free on Sunday 20 October, as part of Yachting Victoria’s 2013 Discover Sailing program.
A variety of large trailable yachts, which are larger than the usual sailing dinghies and feature enclosed cabins, will be on hand at Melbourne City Marina in Melbourne’s Docklands precinct for the public to try out. The day, running from 9.30am to 4.00pm is organised by Yaching Victoria’s Trailable Yacht Division.
Discover Sailing Program Manager, Gavin Wall said, “Families will be able to get on board and go for a sail along the marina, as well as explore a variety of different sized and classed trailable yachts on display and speak to owners about their sailing experiences in both competitive sailing and casual cruising.
“Trailable yachts come in many shapes and sizes with sleeping and cooking facilities and are a great option for families or couples who enjoy holidays or weekends out on the water, but like to stay dry!”
Compared to sailing dinghies which are only suitable for sailing in enclosed areas off the beach, the trailable yachts are much larger, safer vessels to sail, usually starting from 16 feet and reaching up to 28 feet in length, and are capable of sailing in more open waters. The extra size means that they can be enjoyed with friends and family and used for overnight stays, and are capable of being towed long distances, similar to a caravan.
Trailable Yacht Discover Sailing Day is free to attend and all yachts and safety equipment will be provided by the owners, coinciding with the opening of the 2013-14 sailing season. Also on offer will be show bags and giveaways with the opportunity to learn more about joining the social trailable yacht sailing community.
Run by Yachting Victoria, the Discover Sailing program is designed to increase participation in the sport of sailing. More than 3,000 Victorians participated in last year’s inaugural Discover Sailing program, with many taking up yacht club memberships and signing up for Learn to Sail programs.
