Last night I attended a free, accredited music-industry-career-workshop focusing on radio at RMIT, which was hosted by FReeZACentral, in partnership with SYN – Melbourne’s student operated youth radio station.

Speakers included experienced professionals from the music industry as well as representatives from Nova, ABC Radio, 3RRR, PBS FM and SYN itself.

The workshop covered the areas of performance, technical production, event management, music business, radio broadcasting and marketing & publicity with each speaker giving attendees a run down about what is involved with their own role, as well as career opportunities available in these sectors, all with a radio slant.

Scott Menz has worked at numerous radio stations around the country and produces Nova 100’s breakfast program with Dave Hughes and Kate Langbreok.

Natalene Muscat is ABC Local Radio’s Marketing Manager and formally worked at 3D Radio in Adelaide, PBSfm and Mushroom Distribution Services.

Steve Cross is the Marketing Director of Remote Control Records (distribution for The White Stripes, Radiohead, Vampire Weekend, Cat Power, TV On The Radio and more) which he co-founded in 2001. He has also presented Beat Orgy on PBS fm and 3RRR for over 20 years.

Hugo T Armstrong is a current PBS fm radio announcer, ex- Program Manager at PBS fm and Queenscliff Music Festival and organises the Blues Train event.

Community radio specialist, Emma Sharp is the Assistant Manager at SYN and formerly worked at Edge Radio in Hobart and 3RRR and 3CR in Melbourne.

Andrew Kitchen was singer of former local band Antiskeptic, and is now Artist Development Coordinator for The Push working on the FReeZA Push Start Band Competition and Face the Music industry conference.

The workshop provided a great introduction to working in radio and speakers were full of helpful advice and information about how to secure the dream career.

FReeZACentral is a Victorian Government initiative funded by the Department of Planning and Community Development, as part of Victoria Rocks program, and managed by The Push. In addition to the annual workshop program, FReeZACentral includes an annual mentoring program, where 50 young people (18-25) are mentored by music industry professionals and organise a tour and CD release.
